The Revival of Volkswagen’s V8 Engines?

Volkswagen’s V8 engines didn’t look like they were going to last, as Audi’s latest diesel V8 engine in the SQ7 was rumored to be the brand’s last. It seems like Audi could be moving towards turbochargers and hybrids, but new reports show that the V8 might not be dead yet. Porsche has recently launched a new aluminum 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 for its new Panamera Turbo. This engine delivers 542 horsepower and even at half engine speed, delivers 335 horsepower. It definitely has the potential to see a lot more usage.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said that “Porsche’s new engine plant will also contribute towards synergies within the Volkswagen Group.” Porsche has recently spent $88.6 million on the plant to build 200 units of the new V8 daily. It seems that Porsche’s F8 will also see action in the Audi A8 and Bentley Mulsanne. The Panamera Turbo has a 0-60mph of 3.8 seconds with the engine and a Turbo S model could pack as much as 600 horsepower. Even with this immense speed though, this engine is 30% more efficient than its predecessor. It’ll be interesting to see how the V8 performs from here on out.
