Los Angeles has a big smog problem. To combat it, the the LAPD has decided to purchase electric vehicles that will help protect and serve the city. It should be known that this move is not to waste taxpayer money on unnecessary cars. One has to see the bigger picture.
Why did the LAPD choose an i3 over a Tesla Model S and other electric vehicles? The answer must lye on the efficiency, reliability, abundance of BMW service centers in LA, and the ease of BMW connected drive services. As one might guess, this car will not be used in high speed pursuits. It will instead be used to shuttle around police officers on duty.
The BMW i3 is able to sprint from 0-60 in a solid 7.0 seconds. It has a top speed of 92mph, and has a low 160 miles on a single charge. It makes sense as to why the LAPD will not be using this type of vehicles to chase down criminals. We hope that ordering a fleet of these will show not to be a waste of taxpayer money.
